AOA Cream are an AOA (Ace of Angels) sub-unit consisting of Yuna, Hyejeong and Chanmi. "I'm Jelly Baby" -- that's its official English title -- is their debut single and it's been taking the K-Pop world by storm. Something that should come as no surprise to anyone who's heard it, as it's quite the pink and fluffy earworm. It wiggles its way inside of your head and stays there for hours. Initially, I wasn't sure that was such a good thing. The first time I listened to it I thought it sounded to plastic-y, if that makes any sense. It just felt so formulaic and synthetic that a computer could have made it. And, surely, a computer did make it. A computer programmed by a producer, but you get the idea. I do believe the bass guitar is actually played on a real instrument, and the girls obviously sang their vocals, but everything else just struck me as being artificial sweetener. It was too saccharine. And, to be honest, part of me still feels that way about it. It does seem like any random K-Pop producer could have come up with it in 12 hours, if not less. But, there's no denying that it's catchy, which I finally had to admit after listening to it a few times.

Even as I'm writing this, I'm having conflicting thoughts about this one. It strikes me as the sort of song that will be catchy for about 15 minutes and then everyone will get bored with it and forget about it. I think it would have been a decent B-side, but I feel that they should have come up with something stronger and more original for their debut single. I can almost guarantee you that whatever they do next will be better than this. Well, OK, it could be more of the same, which is what you get from some K-Pop stars, but chances are that someday AOA Cream will have a few mini-albums under their belt and people will look back and say, yeah, that jelly song, it wasn't so good. In the meantime, I'm sure we'll all keep listening to it. -Michael McCarthy
