SICK REVIEWS:

I've had the flu and a bad cough for a week and a half now. That combined with my regular health problems has meant a whole lot of suffering. To say I was miserable would be an understatement. But there are a few tunes that I've managed to enjoy during this time when most things just sound blah. Here are some of the enjoyable ones.

HANAE: "Shugarirura"

This digital single is beautiful and endearing. When I was angry about being sick and wanted to break stuff, listening to this song eased my stress a bit. I may or may not have listened to it five times in a row one time. In any case, Hanae has a really sweet voice and this song reminds me of Chara. It's so light and fluffy but in an artsy way. No obligatory metal solo here, folks. If this one conforms to a mold, it's a very different one than what the J-Pop machine is churning out lately.

PERFUME: "FLASH"

Of course, it's Perfume, so it has to be good, right? But it's better than good. This time around they don't sound so much like Capsule. They sound like J-Pop from the future. Shimmering, colorful synth blows you away while the mighty potent bass shakes the ground beneath you. I fell in love with this one the first time I heard it, on a day when I rarely got out of bed because everything hurt.

CHEEKY PARADE: "SKYGATE"

Of course, you're going to get a standard J-Pop tune from Cheeky Parade. Some formulaic dribble, right? Except, no, that's not the case. This one shakes the mold around quite a bit, taking what worked from yesterday's J-Pop and marrying it to next year's. Totally feels like music from the future. The B-side, "Faith," was too much of a syrupy ballad for me to dig while in the depths of the flu but there's a reason why they are b-sides after all.

JY: 最後のサヨナラ - EP

Subtle piano ballad stuff. But not in an over the top way like when Ayumi tries to sound like Celine Dion after inhaling a helium balloon. It's pretty standard pop fare, but JY's voice has a lot of character to it and makes these three songs shine brightly even on a day of despair.
